The world of police and technology comes together at events across the globe, and the number of events around Intelligence and Homeland Security is rapidly growing every year. We’ve put together a list of not-to-miss conferences and events for the second half of 2018. Take a look!

KDD AI

When: August, 19-23, 2018
Where: London, UK

The KDD conference is an event that draws in multidisciplinary speakers and attendees working in data science. It is the foremost conference for insights in education and practitioner experience within data analytics and big data. Data is becoming a vital part of our intelligence, and the event emphasizes the practical, with a number of hands-on tutorials and workshops as well as talks. Interesting workshops and demos include “Outlier detection deconstructed” and “Establishing Standards for Ethical Technology.”

Artificial Intelligence Conference

When: September 4-7, 2018 TBA
Where: San Francisco, CA, USA

The AI Conference focuses on the practical application of AI in real-world scenarios. It brings together some of the world's foremost authorities on AI and its applications. Topics revolve around methods, implementations, and case studies. There is a two-day training event before the main conference which covers tools such as TensorFlow and Apache Spark. Talks include a number of speakers from Microsoft, AWS, AT&T, and Uber. A not to miss talk is by Hari Koduvely of Zighra Inc: “Preventing Cyber Attacks using Deep Reinforcement Learning.”

TechCrunch Disrupt

When: September, 5-7 2018
Where: San Francisco, CA, USA

TechCrunch online magazine brings the latest tech news to our browser; Disrupt is the conference version. The event looks at emerging technologies and how they are helping to transform business. The event also showcases startups and has lots of chances to network. Some interesting talks that are relevant to law enforcement and police technology include “Decoding the DNA Opportunity” from Anne Wojcicki of 23andme and a talk about the future of AI “Defending the Future” by Marillyn Hewson of Lockheed Martin.

Strata Data Conference

When: September 11-13, 2018
Where: New York, NY, USA

Stata Data is a highly respected data conference showcasing new technologies and solutions. The event is all about the sharing of information using expert talks and case studies. There are also a number of training courses and boot camps for hands-on experience of the latest tools. There is also a specialist track on law, governance, and ethics. Talks include “An ethical foundation for the AI-driven future” by Harry Glaser of Periscope Data and “Beyond Explainability: Regulating Machine Learning In Practice” by Andrew Burt of Immuta.

NTOA (regional)

When: September 13-21, 2018
Where: Milwaukee, WI, USA

Law Enforcement Operations Conference and Trade Show is the National Tactical Officers Association (NTAO) trade show. The show runs over 6 days and is a busy show covering incident debriefs, practical sessions, and seminars. There is an impressive agenda packed with law enforcement related items over the 6 days including a number of technology-focused sessions such as Lt. Ralph McDuffie’s “Managing an Incident Command Post and Tactical Operations Center” and Anthony Galante’s “Integration of Unmanned Aircraft into the Law Enforcement Agency.”

MCCA - Orlando

When: October 4-5, 2018
Where: Orlando, FL, USA

Major Cities Chiefs Association (MCCA) meets three times a year to discuss hot topics affecting law enforcement in the largest cities in the United States and Canada. The MCCA wields important influence over public policy in law enforcement, and the conference offers an opportunity for in depth discussions on emerging technology in law enforcement.

ASCIA

When: October 4-6, 2018
Where: Orlando, FL, USA

Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies(ASCIA) meetup is for members and invited guests. The meeting is focused on training and education as well as discussions on pertinent topics. The meetup also engages members on collaboration and development of strategic policies including the use of technology in policing.

IACP Orlando

When: October 6-9, 2018 
Where: Orlando, FL, USA

International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) is an event mixing an exhibition of vendors, education program, and expert speakers including in the field of police technology. A specialist track looking at the application of technology to policing is included in this year's program. This year’s show speakers are still being firmed up, but catch up with interesting topics from last year's show including this video on information sharing.

London AI

When: October 9-11, 2018 
Where: London, UK

The Artificial Intelligence Conference London presents the latest AI technologies. The event has a number of key topic areas including some highly applicable to law enforcement including “The Impact of AI on Business and Society.” This track has some useful talks from the likes of Martin Goodson of Evolution AI and Mark St. John Qualter of RBS bank talking on “AI and Financial Crime.” The event also offers a training package including a course on “Create, Optimize, and Deploy a Deep Learning Solution using TensorFlow and Caffe.”

NFCA

When: November 6-8, 2018
Where: Alexandria, VA USA

National Fusion Center host this annual national training event for Fusion Center members and associated bodies. The Fusion Centers, as well as promoting and protecting civil rights, offer collaboration with all Homeland Security Partners. The event is a must for anyone associated with Fusion Centers and interested in the intersection of intelligence and information sharing with community law enforcement.

NIPS

When: December 3-8, 2018
Where: Montreal, Canada

The NIPS conference is dedicated to machine learning and computational neuroscience. It offers 5-days jam-packed with talks, demonstrations, workshops, and discussions around the subject of AI, machine learning, and deep learning. This year’s show is still being firmed up, but the 2017 event gives you a flavor of what to expect. Check out last year’s video presentations on subjects such as “Adaptive Classification for Prediction Under a Budget.”
